"The cross is not what God inflicts upon Jesus in order to forgive. The cross is what God in Christ endures as he forgives," says John Paul II. "God was in Christ reconciling the world unto himself, and so the violence of the cross is purely human." He adds that when a perfectly righteous man comes into this world of sin, that will be his end.
