What Is the Common Good?
In democratic societies people are going into the voting booth to choose. Justice is always defined as rendering the other his due, but over the course of the 20th century that gets turned around a bit. The claim for justice isn't so much anymore my guaranteeing that the claim of the other is met. But justice becomes an exercise of self expression - I stand up in the public square to claim my own right. Even when we hear that term individual rights, we still think there's something good and still worth preserving and protecting.
