How Do You Encode the Phenotype of Architectures?

I don't actually know how you make the search space unbounded for architectures. What you could do is sort of increase your architecture and then periodically trim it down to get maybe 90% to 100% performance, but with a drastically smaller architecture. And then if you keep doing this, maybe you end up with something that like fills the full capacity.
