The Life and Times of Emily and John Sargent

Emily Sargent was born in Rome on January 29, 1857. She and her brother John lived a wandering life around Europe for most of their lives. Emily experienced a serious spinal injury or possibly a spinal disease when she was about four years old. After spending more than 30 years moving from place to place, Emily had her first permanent home starting in the early 1890s. The third surviving Sargent child was born in 1870 when Emily and John were already teenagers. That child was named after Violet Padgett, who was also their godmother.
