The Origin of the Word Atheist

English word atheist comes to us from the Greek word a Theos which applies negative prefix alpha to the word for God, Theos. Christians were often accused by their Roman contemporaries of being Atheos in this sense. Until that point atheism was almost always an accusation that was directed towards one's opponents. It wasn't something people claimed for themselves as a positive identity but in the 18th century philosophers like Denny Diderot, Paul Henry Dobach began to claim that they were atheists. So rather than having connotations of immorality or impiety it becomes more like what we understand today as an identity people.
