CHAPTER

What's It Like to Be a California Ground Squirrel

California ground squirrels engage in this practice called tail flagging, where they wag their tail back and forth pretty rapidly to trigger a response in the snake. They also have high levels of venom resistance to rattlesnakes so it's just super badass and interesting phenomenon. If the body temperature is low enough, because these squirrels know that Rattlesnakes will eat their pops, the squirrels will attack the rattlesnake and often beat them.
