The History of Universities in Europe
There was often doubling, where two universities would form in fairly nearby cities. The reason is because there were frequent fights and disputes within these universities. Some of them ended up finding their own supporters and patrons as a kind of friendly rival to the original that they split off from. For example, cambridge started off in the early 12 hundreds following a heresy controversy at oxford.
