After the war, Great Britain was much impoverished and there was food rationing until 1954. The privations were sort of the small luxuries, but they didn't really impinge on me because I guess my parents were a sort of filter between me and that. There had been obviously bomb damage in the major cities like London or Coventry or Birmingham. But it was quite a difficult time for my parents to bring up my two elder brothers. They would have had the experience of being children during the war, which must have been quite difficult.
