Erhart was born and raised in the Midwest. Her father worked for a railroad company, so her family moved around a lot. Erhart went to college near Philadelphia but didn't graduate because she felt there was still something missing. In 1917, when the United States entered the First World War, aviation was evolving as a crucial part of the fight.
