Equatorial Guinea discovered massive deposits of offshore oil in 1995. Almost overnight the country became exceedingly wealthy, attaining a higher GDP per capita than even its former colonial rulers in Spain. President Hobon has been in power for 43 years now, and has just been reelected. Despite its health, around 70- 75% of its 1.6 million inhabitants living below poverty line.
