First Christians spoke about the scandal of the cross. They were aware that it wasn't intuitive that someone who had died this way. Even once Constantine has converted in the Roman Empire, there is reluctance to pay to portray Jesus on the cross. There's a reluctance to dwell on the sufferings and physical agonies.
