The Lone Ranger and the Cowboy Law Man
The cowboy law man comes to represent a kind of American knighthood. He is fundamentally an itinerant again like the medieval knight errant and even the title of the novel riders of the purple sage sort of echoes the names of chivalric orders like knights of the red cross etc. The fascination with cowboys horses was slower to develop in the 19th century when they were just taken as beasts of burden means of transportation. After about 1910 it spread through american art and literature after about 1910 but still has these certain constants.
