The Unintended Consequences of Assembly Bill 2712
The California Universal Basic Income Act would give Californians aged 18 or older, $1,000 per month. The bill purports to pay for this tripling of spending with a 10% value added tax. Currently, California collects $25 billion per year in sales and use taxes. So the California UBI would increase sales taxes on Californians by a factor of 10.
