The Fed increased its balance sheet by extending discount window loans versus buying treasuries and mortgage securities. Mike Downey: The differentiating factor here is the deposit stuff is meant to be a bandaid, whereas the QT is more of a permanent shift in the way the Fed is approaching that tightening and easing of their balance sheet. Yet it's very clear that the Fed's real job and why they were created was to maintain the safety and stability of the banking system.
