Is There a Difference Between Essence and Existence?
Anselm's argument that God exists on the basis of his essence is wrong, according to Thomas Aquinas. Anselm supposes he has a kind of grasp of divine nature, which is impossible for humans,. And so if this is right, then you can't use the onological argument to prove the existence of God. Right? We can't. I like to say there's a sound ontological argument, but God only knows how it goes. It has to bottom out in a being whose essence includes existence or being who exists by essence, by exists essentially.
