The History of Mount Rushmore
The United States dedicated this land to the American Indians as part of the Great Sioux Indian Reservation, with a treaty called Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868. But when gold was found there, just six years later, the U.S. government took the land back. Tension because of this still exists today. Many of the Lakota never accepted the takeover of their land and have tried to get that land back by filing lawsuits against the federal government.
