In 1942 during the Second World War, the US military was looking to create new secret codes. Philip Johnston came up with the concept of using the Navajo language in the military to spifle the enemy. 29 young Navajo men were recruited and sent to Camp Elliot in San Diego where they started developing what would become the Navajo code.
