The Importance of Building a Surge in the Middle East
The surge really became essential, not only to reverse the military momentum in Iraq, but it also facilitated President Obama's strategy to withdraw forces from Iraq. The same Secretary Gates who was instrumental in getting m wraps to protect troops in Iraq also cut back on the F 22 program. If you gave him truth serum would say that that was a mistake. We didn't build nearly enough of them in that timeframe for a great power mission.
