Permafrost is defined as ground that remains frozen for two or more years. As in Siberia, permafrost blankets Greenland, too. Almost a quarter of the land in the most northern part of the globe is permafrost. Geologists SW Muller coined the term in 1947 as a contraction of the term permanent frost.
