The Puritan Regime and the Civil War
After the civil war, a mainly puritan elite that was in control of parliament imposed greater and greater social control. Tried to run not only the state, but society through the authority of parliament. There was a great degree of puritan suppression of behaviors and activities that they considered improper. And these rebellions, especially in ireland, were very brutally suppressed with many thousands killed or deported forcibly to the colonies. So this new regime, under the grandees and led particularly by cromwell sees a certain degree of liberalization, but none the less, continuing suppression of actual living experiments in reform.
