I don't think we'd expect to see anything like this if we assumed that there was a benevolent invigilator. This is the problem of evil. Of course, you could say that maybe this is all part of some grand plan. Maybe animals do go to have an after-life and it just kind of makes up for the suffering that they're forced to undergo.
