I think every idea builds on what came before consciously or unconsciously. In the Middle Ages, there were these manuscripts called Florilegia and it comes from the Latin for flower and gather. And they were excerpts of writings that a quote unquote author would reorder and edit together in a way that better explains whatever point he's trying to make. Or explain a specific doctrine or idea that has already talked about in these disparate other texts. So this kind of remix manuscript was one of the first recorded examples of remix culture but also more importantly to me, an example of curation as a form of authorship.
