I think every idea builds on what came before consciously or unconsciously. In the Middle Ages, there were these manuscripts called Florilegia and it comes from the Latin for flower and gather. And they were excerpts of writings that a quote unquote author would reorder and edit together in a way that better explains whatever point he's trying to make.
