Rome and the Punic Wars

Augustine asks where Rome's gods were during the wars with Carthage. The first Punic war saw religious rights undertaken, but nothing came of them. And while Rome finally defeated Carthage in 146 BCE at the close of the Third Punic war, this defeat ushered in a period of decadence and international strife that Augustine maintains was much worse than what Carthage had ever posed.
