Science and scientists were scrutinized by the communist party ideologues from 1917. Every institution had a department entrusted with ideological control of what it was doing. In third disciplines, we declared bulge as pseudoscience and research in this area was barred for years. The most famous example known in the West is with the San Carisma - an agronomist who rejected Mendelian genetics because it was inconsistent with Marxist ideology.
