The Importance of Parenting an Autistic Son
Autism is a neurological, developmental disability. To me, it's not a disability. It's an advantage. But I can't turn off being autistic. If I turn off my brain, how do I parent? I don't think that's possible. The biggest challenge of being an autistic dad is the need to suppress my natural autistic responses in order to properly care for my kids. That's what I feel like I've got to do. Be a naturally autistic dad and raise a naturally autistic son and a neurotypical son. In other words, allowing myself to be my true autistic self while caring for my autistic son doesn't work most of the time. And it's a horrible
