There's a strong faction that believes he was completely an atheist his entire life and never really had any particular religious conviction. But there was a real desire in the moments, the days after his death to paint him as a Christian martyr. And so that is what essentially happened for decades after his death. He becomes very deft at appealing to the sensibilities of evangelical audiences,. which were the majority of Americans and the voting public in the north.
