Melissa: I don't think we actually said this like this term, the idea of phonemic awareness in the dark. The whole purpose of phonemic Awareness is to work with phonics. It enjoys a reciprocal relationship. We need them both. But again, it's that point of I can say any word, I can says any sound,. Even if my students don't yet know how to represent these sounds with print. And we can still engage in these skills.
