There was real shame or stigma and sort of you could not boldly proclaim that you were a part of the clan, which is why a lot of them have to go underground. The idea that the people who signed up are rubes who are being taken advantage of fits in with those stereotypes of rural people as well. And then obviously when people get exposed as grifters or FBI informants or whatever, it undercuts that,. but I think it just erodes that kind of like, you know, we're social creatures in addition to our racist creatures.
