The 16th century was a time of appalling violence, brutalization and disease. The epidemics that Indigenous people are experiencing in much greater numbers than anyone else is a backdrop against which we have to read all of this. But there's just such a diversity of experience here: We can't stereotype that experience. There are some people who live what would be considered quite an ordinary typical life by European standards.
