Theory is consistent with evolutionary theory. If all the animals had a fight instinct and they fought every single time, that would be bad for everybody. As we get better at catching mai ons, we would expect there to be fewer of them because it would be less of a rereplication advantage. This isn't something she totally made up. I have, since reading that book, read that multiple times from serious scientists trying to study that.
