Rome's long practice of segregating the Peninsula into Romans and non-Romans was clearly an unsustainable one. King Mithridates began waging war on Rome's eastern provinces in 88 BCE. The consul in 88 was Cicero's former commander, General Sulla. Marius collaborated with a Tribune to get himself ratified as the expedition's commander.
