Galileo's Phase Shift

Galileo used a magnificent telescope to observe the phases of Venus. There were no clocks back then 1620s and 1630s. They're like water clocks and like sand clocks. So they did it at two locations that were fairly close to one another. And all they need to know is local noon at that time on a given day. It wasn't like Venus presented them with a challenge.
