Once a marriage was arranged it was time to announce the happy news. A formal engagement party was thrown by the patter familius of the bride with the groom to be seated as the guest of honor. At this party the couple formally announced their consent to be wed and the final details of the dowry if there was one were worked out between the two families. The superstitious Romans studiously avoided the callons, gnons and eyes of any given month which for example would be the first fifth and thirteenth of September.
