The book is based on interviews with Vicki Smith's niece and her ex-husband, Edgar Smith. "He seemed enough like, if not an outright psychopath, then certainly someone with those tendencies that he would just tell me whatever he wanted," she says. The author was working on a project about William F. Buckley at the time of his death in 1957.
