The Discovery of the South Pole
As the twentieth century opened, explorers were vined to be the first to reach earth's north and south poles. The south pole was especially difficult, being 800 miles from the nearest open water to day. Rivalry helped fuel shackleton's attempt to reach the pole. He was hoping to make it before scott made a second attempt. Scott and shackleton first met in 19 hundred 104 on the discovery expedition. They ended up not liking each other too much.
