The Maccabees and the Pharisees
The Maccabees were populist rebel leaders that eventually became legitimized rulers and kings. They also wanted religious backing as well to fight against the religious establishment. That would be their allies. The Pharisees are not Hellenizers. They are nativists and they are populists, Josephus says.
