Before the French Revolution, we just don't have this notion of left versus right. And then there's a period of considerable confusion, which is why I have that 80% threshold. It's true, for example, Frederick Bossiat was one of the best libertarians who ever lived. He sat on the left in the French legislature even though he was complaining about socialism as his bread and butter. The most radical left wing governments have always been on societies on the edge of survival.
