After the Civil War series which had taken me five and a half years to make, I sort of vowed and we sort of all vowed that we didn't want to do a war again. It really hurt. There was no PTSD of course but it was emotionally difficult and gut wrenching. For every diary of a soldier that's dying you put in a hundred of themYou know and that hurt. The movies have been classically American. They have to come to the great American disease of self-importance and exceptionalism so when they deal with Vietnam they deal only with ourselves and the story we are going to tell.
