The trevellyan quote is absolutely perfect. The painting has become a fascination for historians in your profession, quite rightly. I cannot think of another painting that could have told you as much about the life of people living in that palace in 16 56. Not just because it's showing you what people wore. But it's also the threshold into the next world. And that you are all held there in that moment together before, as it were, still alive in the face of death.
