The Last Christmas Factor
Billboard announces its year-end charts in early December, so its chart year typically runs from early December through late November. Whatever is selling well during the previous year's Christmas season often tops the following year's album ranking. If a song is piling up airplay and sales in the closing weeks of the prior year, it has a huge leg up in the year-end Hot 100 competition.
