Freud discovered that if you tell people to believe certain things, they will do so. It's taken most of the 20th century for therapists to find ways of breaking the shocking news without driving them away. Ethno methodology was invented by Harold Garfinkle at UCLA and some people think it was the major intellectual calamity of the 60s.
