The Panopticon and Bentham
Bentham became a democrat because of his experiences with the Panopticon. He did not become someone who believed in a secret surveillance society. Bentham thought the great thing about democracy was that it allowed people to express their own preferences and force the politicians to listen to them. Is he wrong? Finally, what would Bentham say about our digitised surveillance? Bleep bleep world where we're nudged and triggered for cheap pleasures. I'm sure he would.
