I don't think I really fully realized the magnitude of Jean's arc to until I revisited it and all the decisions that he made that led him to this fate. The decision to shoot Barry, as you say, eliminates the one person who could vindicate him. He is fated to become a recent history true crime monster. What does Henry think about the way that you closed the loop on Jean scene? "What a ride. What a journey"
