Malthusian idea was that there were too many people trying to live off too finite a resource. In fact, irish living standards plumated during the seventeenth and eighteenth century because we had too many people who were imaging the island with one point four million people,. Then you've the island with eight million people, right? So of course, the people themselves, their quality of life was actually declining, not increasing.
