Boris Yeltsin and the Russian Revolution

Yeltsin had pushed successfully for the creation of a new position of presidency. The Russian Republic had never been before a power base in Soviet terms. It's a whole complicated history, but it was Yeltsin's genius actually to see that it could be made one. In August 1991 hardliners arrested Gorbachev and seized control of the government. From his upper floor window he can see tanks rumbling through the muscovite streets towards the White House.
