The island was the pearl of the antilles. Their main crop sugar, but they also grew coffee and indigo,. exported those staples back to europe in the triangular slave trade. The cruelty on the island is more well known than the cruelty in martinique and guadaloup. But it also existed there on a smaller scale in some ways because those islands are just smaller.
