What Does the Respect for Marriage Act Do?
The Respect for Marriage Act does three main things. First, it says that the definition of marriage depends on whether a couple are married under state law. The second thing it doing is it says that even if a state doesn't want to recognize same-sex marriage on its own, it must give recognition to people who were married in another state. Third thing it does is it includes a provision that allows nonprofit religious organizations to decline to provide services, accommodations, goods, etc., to wedding of a same-sex couple.
