War has been raging in ukraine since russian forces invaded the country on february 20 fourth. Understanding the conflict requires knowledge of the territory under attack in specific regions like the donbas which you have heard mentioned over and over again recently. It's a 65 hundred square mile region in eastern ukraine, which shares a border with russia to the east. Donbass three major cities are mariapole, donesk and lugansk,. With the latter too being capitals of their respective provinces. The two republics were never recognized by the european union or the wider international community. For a period, ukranian officials referred to them as terrorist areas.
