In Psalm 83, here we have a community petition for protection from asaph. He prays that god will confound israel's enemies. In verse 15 and 16, so persecute them with thy tempest. Make them afraid with thy storm. Fill their faces with shame. But notice why, that they may seek thy am o lord. Asaph is acknowledging that the purpose of god's punishment is redemption. It's meant to be redemptive rather than punitive. And even if it doesn't turn you back, well, maybe it'll turn some one else.
