Andrea de pietro de la gondola was apprenticed at 13 to a stone carver in padua, but in 15 24, he fled to nearby vicenza and settled there for the next 14 years. He worked as an apprentice and assistant to the carvers giovanni da pedimuro and girolamo pitoni. A writer of drama, poetry and philological scholarship, he accepted a number of young nobles into his household as students.
